Crude oil up on likely supply disruption

Crude oil futures closed higher in the domestic market on Thursday on expectations that Hurricane Matthew will disrupt supplies, leading to another weekly drawdown in the nation's stockpiles. Also, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) plans to agree on a coordinated production cut when it next meets in late November, in a bid to rein in a global fuel supply overhang that has dogged prices for the last two years. At the MCX, crude oil futures for October 2016 contract closed at Rs 3372 per barrel, up by 1.54 per cent, after opening at Rs 3307, against a previous close of Rs 3321. It touched the intra-day high of Rs 3377.

Silver down on feeble global cues

Silver futures closed lower in the domestic market on Thursday as participants engaged in trimming their positions taking weak cues from global market. Marketmen attributed the fall in silver prices at futures trade to a weak trend in the precious metals overseas and profit-booking by participants at existing levels. At the MCX, silver futures for December 2016 contract closed at Rs 41,490 per kg, down by 2.64 per cent, after opening at Rs 42,500, against a previous close of Rs 42,615. It touched the intra-day low of Rs 41,160.

Gold down on strong US dollar

Gold futures closed lower in the domestic market on Thursday amid a rallying U.S. dollar index and upbeat U.S. economic data which continued to produce selling in the precious metals markets. The weekly U.S. jobless claims report Thursday showed a sharp drop in claims in the latest week and added to a batch of generally better U.S. data released this week and helped to push gold prices to new low. At the MCX, gold futures for October 2016 contract ended at Rs 29564 per 10 grams, down by 1.18 per cent, after opening at Rs 29,835, against a previous close of Rs 29,916. It touched the
intra-day low of Rs 29,550.
